"'There is insufficient recognition in the [EU] text of the Hamas atrocity that started this round of conflict,' said Fitton-Brown, who is now an adviser to the Counter Extremism Project, a non-profit group based in Germany and the US.

'There is also insufficient recognition of Hamas' explicit commitment to treat any ceasefire as an opportunity to regroup and do it again; with the ultimate aim of killing Jews and destroying the state of Israel. This needs to be stated upfront,' he said."

"Hamas’s wealth and financial foundation might still be largely intact. As a result, the militant group could potentially recover despite the devastation in the enclave, said senior director of the Counter Extremism Project, Hans-Jakob Schindler.

He stressed the need for a global strategy to limit Hamas's finances, including stronger US and EU sanctions, closing regulatory loopholes in countries that had not previously listed the group, such as Switzerland, and globally recognising Hamas as a terrorist organisation."

The last attack on Gaza and Hamas positions before October 7 was in May 2023."
