Death of Abu Mohammed al-Adnani Announced by Terror Group

(New York, NY) -- The Counter Extremism Project (CEP) is releasing updated resources on ISIS Strategist and Spokesman Abu Mohammed al-Adnani, whose death was announced by the terror group but has yet to be confirmed.   

The Pentagon acknowledged that Adnani had been the target of an airstrike near the Syrian city of al-Bab, in Aleppo province, but could not determine if he had been killed.

Adnani, the leader of ISIS in Syria, led ISIS’s sophisticated use of social media to propagandize, recruit followers worldwide, and inspire violence. He also directed the ISIS’s unit responsible for exporting terror attacks internationally, and through his fiery rhetoric, encouraged lone wolf attacks against civilians.

According to the U.S. State Department, Adnani, a Syrian national, was one of the first foreign fighters to battle Coalition forces in Iraq alongside al-Qaeda in Iraq in the early 2000s. Adnani was reportedly captured by U.S. troops in 2005, and imprisoned at the U.S.-run Camp Bucca in Iraq until the prison’s closure in 2009. There, he reportedly met Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. Adnani became known as ISIS’s spokesman in June 2014, when he announced the group’s declaration of the caliphate.
